Joanna Mikosz

“All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us.”-Gandalf, Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien

Born and raised outside of Chicago, Illinois, Joanna always knew she wanted to take advantage of a study abroad program once in college. With a background in theatre, the worlds and adventures easily available through film and television have always inspired Joanna to explore what else is out there beyond the borders of her hometown. (It was, in fact, her love for Harry Potter growing up that inspired her to study and live in the United Kingdom!)

Having barely been on a plane before transferring to school in California, she quickly stacked up boarding passes while attending the University of Redlands in Southern California, abroad at the University of Glasgow in Scotland, and working overseas in London, England. With a decade of experience in student-facing roles, Joanna is thrilled with any opportunity to work with students or in the study abroad field. It’s even better when the two can be combined!

After volunteering with high school students through her local church and mentoring middle schoolers during university, Joanna was presented with the opportunity to teach early childcare after graduation. She taught for about five years at an early childcare daycare center. After assisting students with e-learning during the pandemic, she was itching to once again explore the wide world, and was lucky enough to find a position abroad as a student life coordinator for freshmen in their first semester abroad in London. Joanna is currently a study abroad advisor for CIEE (Council on International Educational Exchange), assisting students with their pre-departure advising for sites throughout the Pacific Rim and Africa.

Along with her love of travel and exploration, Joanna continues her love of acting by performing in plays and booking background work in film and TV (to date she’s been on set with three Oscar-winning actors!). She also enjoys spending time with her friends and family, running, going to concerts, watching films and television, and reading. She is a firm believer in going with the flow while traveling and saying “yes” to most opportunities that come her way while abroad. Her next dream holiday location is Australia and New Zealand to hopefully visit the Hobbiton set!
