Ryan Gomez

If you want to take the island, burn the boats — Julius Caesar

Education has always been an important dynamic in Ryan Gomez’s life. An alumnus of Florida State University (BS) and Florida Atlantic University (MPA), he devoted seven years of his early professional life to teaching, coaching, and advising at the secondary and higher education levels.

After venturing outside the United States for the first time in 2014, he made it a personal goal to see as much of the world as his wallet could afford. With trips to Rio de Janeiro, Bali, Costa Rica, and Colombia under his belt, he decided to take the plunge and sought out the opportunity for a total cultural immersion.

In 2018, he participated in the Auxiliares de Conversación program and moved to a small, rural village in southeastern Spain. Along with teaching English in an isolated community of two thousand, Ryan also had the chance to reconnect with his ancestral roots and meet his distant relatives from Spain for the first time.

His experience teaching and traveling abroad will be one of the great defining moments of his life. Learning a new language was the main reason he moved to Spain. At the same time, he discovered inner-peace, self-confidence, and a sense of direction for his future. Upon moving back to the United States, Ryan applied to the Police Academy and now works as a Law Enforcement Officer in his hometown. He credits his appreciation and dedication to his community to the friends and families he met teaching in the mountains of Spain.

His adventures in España are far from over. He considers it a home away from home… and has every intention of returning.
